I’m Emma Bonutti D’Agostini, PhD Candidate in Sociology at CREST (Institut Polytechnique de Paris) and médialab (Sciences Po Paris). Welcome to my personal website!

My research lies at the intersection of sociology of journalism and political sociology. In my doctoral dissertation, I study how French and Italian legacy media give visibility and legitimacy to political voices, borrowing tools from CSS and NLP and combining them with qualitative sociological methodologies.

I have the chance of working alongside inspiring people - such as my supervisors, Etienne Ollion (CREST) and Sylvain Parasie (médialab).

Previously, I completed a Research Master in Sociology at Sciences Po Paris, a Bachelor Degree in Political Sciences at Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies and University of Pisa, and a Bachelor Degree in Classical Piano at the Conservatory of Udine (because, why not).

Research Interests

My work is interdisciplinary, and I frequently collaborate with researchers in political science and computer science. Cross-cutting themes in my work include journalistic deontologies and practices; right-wing politics; political communcation in hybrid media systems. Throughout my research, I also reflect about how we can leverage CSS to shed new light on classic sociological questions.

News

🌆 I have just started a 4-month visiting at the Incite Institute, Columbia University, as an Alliance International Exchange Scholar. If you are in New York City, I’d love to get in touch!

📚 If you read French, you can check out my review of the book “Un journalisme en ligne mondialisé : socio-histoire comparative” by Florence Le Cam and Fábio Henrique Pereira, on the new issue of Réseaux.

🌟 My first academic paper has been published on Journalism !

Other Things

I spend an embarassing amount of time reading. I have a soft spot for family sagas, magical realism novels, historical and political fiction, introspective and psychological stories. If you are ever in need of book recommendations (or just curious about what I’ve been hoarding), feel free to take a look here.
